Insult to Majesty! Arrest Prayut!
The king as well as the royal family enjoy the highest respect in Thailand. They are also protected by the Lèse-Majesté Law §112, on the basis of which critics can be sentenced to prison terms of up to 15 years. The law has been tightened and extended to all members of the royal family. What this law is used for, especially in a military dictatorship, can be seen daily in the media for years.
The late, respected King Bhumibol himself commented in his birthday speech in 2005:
"If it is said that the king must not be criticized, it would mean that the king is not human. ... If the king cannot make mistakes, it is like looking down on him and not treating him as a human being. But the king can make mistakes."
To be sure, the current king certainly cannot be described as a humanistic philanthropist who treats critics with tolerance and grace. But he is said to have instructed the government from Germany not to prosecute demonstrators for insulting his majesty.
WHAT FOLLOWS?
If head of government Prayut has journalists, students and even monks imprisoned and charged for criticizing the king, THAT IS INSULT TO MAJESTY! The head of government sees the entire royal family as a family of gods who make no mistakes and are not to be criticized. They do not appear to him as human beings.
Blasphemy, insult, lèse majesté!
"Arrest Prayut!" I shout to the police.
